Question: Need ftp help! 403 forbidden error on website i am updating, occurred after adding swf file to my index.?

Hello, i'm fairly new to using FTP servers and i've got a pretty big problem on my hands. I'm currently updating my uncles website using Dreamweaver CS4/ Flash Professional CS4. The problem occurred when i imported a 534kb .swf file to my public_html folder and inserted it into the home page. I didn't upload or change any other files on the server before this happened excluding the swf. Im using OS X Mac, and renting a small home server from the previous designer of the webpage, I think its apache based but i don't know enough about networking and servers to be certain. Any Help would be appreciated more than you could imagine. Thank you. Here is the Error message i recieve when i try to get to the site through safari. Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
