How to make my site start with index.html?

Question: How to make my site start with index.html?

(Posted by: lespauljr on 2010-02-07 23:51:53)

I'm building a website on some free host server (using ftp, i guess), and when i try accessing my url e.g. www.somesite.somehost.com, it displays a blank page containing this: Index of / Index.html So i need to click on index.html to view my first page. How can i make it display the index.html on screen by default (like showing up when i access my site's url) ? thanks.

If you have typed exactly what is shown when you access your url, then your problem is probably that your site is being run on a unix or linux machine where filenames are case sensitive. If this is the case all you need do is to rename Index.html as index.html

If you are using blue host, or some other hosting service, then they usually have setting page where you can set this up.

Try renaming the file to one of those: default.htm, default.html, index.htm, index.php o default.asp one og these should work as a default display page.

Try creating a file manually instead of using manually, if it is allowed. If the problem still persists, use index.htm or default.html or default.htm Usually, they should have guidelines about which will be the default page that will open up. Or it might be that there is a server problem of some sort. But usually, the manual of your website should let you know. If nothing works, and you know that you are allowed to create files called .htaccess, you can actually set up any page to automatically load up even if it isn't index.whateverextension. Look up .htaccess tutorials as well if you do not wish to make an index.something file. But yes, try the other extensions and consult the forums of your free host. Should help.
